Following a week long of preparation we got to celebrate today the festival of the Trees. We call it Tu B’shvat, the 15th day of the month of Shvat is marking the celebration of the trees. We learn about trees and eat their fruits. The class was working on art project – where children prepared the Sabra, a cactus typically grows in dry areas – using their hand print. They made a necklace of dried orange, scratched papers to find a surprise (a dry leaf) and enjoyed cutting fruit for a fruit salad. They even had a taste of beer (well, not really, it is an Israeli soda called “Black Beer”, that resembles more to Dr. Pepper). We had wonderful fun organizing a full Tu B’Shvat Seder, a meal with all the fruits we named and marked. Needless to say that we tasted our own fruit salad – which was delicious.
Ask your child questions about the celebration today. Your questions need to be detailed (not open ended):
Did you celebrate or had a party today?
What did you eat at the party?
What kind of fruit did you taste?
Was there an apple, orange, banana, dates….
Enjoy your wonderful conversation with your child – because there is nothing like it. Those moments do not get a repeat.
With Love, your Alef Bet Team
